This novel is a powerful and poignant evocation of the friendship of two unusual boys growing up on a tough Midlands housing estate in the 1940s. Set against a background of family strife, it traces a critical period in the boys' lives as they encounter bullies, sexually savvy girls, a suicide, some vintage working class characters and God. It is a story touched by both joy and sadness and has an ending many may find hard to forget.
